George Mason men’s basketball adds Grayer, Relvao

First-year head coach Dave Paulsen has announced Jaire Grayer (Flint, Mich./IMG Academy) and Daniel Relvao (Coimbra, Portugal/Mountain Mission) have joined the George Mason men’s basketball team for the 2015-16 season.

“We’re very excited that Jaire and Daniel have joined our program,” commented Paulsen. “Jaire had a very impressive summer and showed a level of versatility and athleticism that should translate into success in the A-10. He is very competitive and has the ability to score at all three levels.”

A 6’4” guard/wing, Grayer spent his senior season at IMG Academy after attending Flint Southwestern Classical Academy in Michigan his junior year. While at Southwestern, Grayer made The Associated Press’ All-State First Team having averaged 16 points, 13 rebounds, 4.3 blocks, 4 assists and 3.3 steals per game. While at IMG Academy, he averaged 15 points, seven rebounds and 4 assists per game.

His father, Jeff Grayer, helped lead Flint Northwestern to two Class A state basketball titles in 1984 and 1985 before becoming Iowa State’s all-time leading collegiate scorer and launching a 10-year NBA basketball career. Milwaukee selected Grayer as the 13^th overall pick in the 1988 NBA Draft as he began a professional career with stops at the Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers, Sacramento Kings and the Charlotte Hornets from 1988-1998. He was also a member of the 1988 U.S. Olympic basketball team.

Relvao, a 6’9” forward, attended Mountain Mission High School in Grundy, Va. his junior and senior seasons, appearing in 65 games. As a senior, Relvao averaged 5.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.6 blocks, 0.6 assists and 0.5 steals per game after averaging 5.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game his junior season. While at Mountain Mission, Relvao was tabbed the Most Improved Player his junior season. Relvao has also competed for his home country as a member of the Portuguese National Team for three years.

“Daniel is a very skilled and smart front court player,” noted Paulsen. “He runs the floor extremely well and has great rebounding instincts. He is still very new to the game but has gained valuable experience playing at Mountain Mission and on the Portuguese National Team. I believe the future is very bright for Daniel.”

Grayer and Relvao join newcomers DeAndre Abram, Danny Dixon, Otis Livingston II and Kameron Murrell for the 2015-16 season.
