Game Notes: UVA baseball hosts Longwood on Wednesday

The UVA baseball team returns home Wednesday to start a six-game homestand as it faces off with Longwood. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Davenport Field. The game originally was scheduled for Tuesday but was moved because of a forecast for inclement weather.

 

Broadcast Information

WINA 1070-AM and 98.9-FM will have the radio broadcast. VirginiaSports.com will have a video broadcast, which is available through a Cavaliers Live subscription. A link to live statistics (GameTracker) also can be found on VirginiaSports.com.

 

Things to Know

• Ernie Clement reached the 50-hit plateau in 33 games (fastest to 50 since Phil Gosselin did it in 31 games in 2010).
• Virginia limited BC to 17 hits in three games.
• UVA leads the ACC and ranks ninth nationally in hits (365).
• UVA is batting .327 with two outs this season.
• The Cavaliers are batting .328 in home games this year.
• UVA has committed at least one error in 18 straight games (11 errors in first 16 games).

 

Promotions

The $2 Tuesday promotion ($2 Hoo Dogs and 22 oz. Pepsi products) will be honored Wednesday. In addition, Tuesday is Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry’s. Free ice cream is available for fans at the game on Wednesday while supplies last.

 

Virginia-Longwood Series

Winners of eight straight games against Longwood, Virginia has a 12-2 advantage in the series against the Lancers. Longwood’s last win against UVA came on April 9, 1984, in Charlottesville. UVA scored a 14-6 victory over Longwood in 2015 at Davenport Field. Matt Thaiss homered and drove in four runs as part of a four-hit performance.

 

Home Sweet Home

Virginia is starting a six-game homestand before hitting the road for eight straight contests. UVA is 366-90 (.803) at home since 2004 under Brian O’Connor, including a 14-7 mark this year. UVA has averaged 3,422 fans per game this year, including a season-high 4,300 on April 2 against NC State.

 

Noting Longwood

Longwood holds a 19-14 record, including a 7-5 mark in Big South, after dropping two of three games at High Point last weekend. Alex Lewis leads the team in batting (.366), home runs (4), hits (45) and RBI (31). Connar Bastaich is batting .303, while the Lancers are hitting .246 as a team. Longwood owns a 4.41 team ERA and is limiting opponents to a .255 batting average. The Lancers hold a .969 team fielding percentage this season.
