Game Notes: #2 UVA basketball on the road at #13 UNC

  • Virginia continues its first three-game stretch vs. top-15 opponents (No. 4 Duke, No. 13 North Carolina and No. 10 Louisville) since 1997 (No. 13 North Carolina, No. 2 Wake Forest and No. 13 Duke).

UVa Ranked No. 2 For Third Straight Week

  • UVa is ranked No. 2 in the AP poll for the third straight week.
  • Prior to this year, the Cavaliers achieved their last No. 2 ranking on March 8, 1983.
  • Virginia has delivered three of the 11 home losses by teams currently ranked in the top 16 of this week’s AP poll (Notre Dame, VCU, Maryland).
  • The Cavaliers have been ranked in the top 10 for the first 11 weeks of the season for the first time since 1982-83.
  • The No. 9 AP preseason ranking was UVa’s best since a No. 1 ranking to start the 1982-83 season.
  • UVa is one of three teams (Duke and Arizona) that have been ranked in the top 10 for 15 straight weeks dating back to last season.

 

Virginia All-Time vs. North Carolina

  • Virginia is 51-128 all-time vs. North Carolina in the series that dates back to 1910-11.
  • The Cavaliers are 6-65, including a 3-23 mark at the Smith Center, against UNC in Chapel Hill, N.C.
  • The Cavaliers posted a 76-61 win against the Tar Heels last season in Charlottesville.
  • Virginia has a two-game losing streak against the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill and aim for its first win at the Smith Center since a 75-60 victory on Jan. 31, 2010.

Last Time vs. North Carolina

  • Malcolm Brogdon and Joe Harris each scored 16 points as Virginia defeated North Carolina, 76-61, on Jan. 20, 2014.
  • The Cavaliers, who led by 23 points in the second half, also received 13 points from Justin Anderson and eight points from Anthony Gill.
  • Kennedy Meeks scored 15 points and James Michael McAdoo had 11 for North Carolina.
  • Virginia made eight 3-pointers and turned 11 North Carolina turnovers into 17 points.

  • Virginia started the second half with a 16-4 burst and led by 11 with just under 11 minutes to play.
  • Malcolm Brogdon led Virginia with 17 points and Justin Anderson had 11.
  • Duke’s Justise Winslow had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Duke shot 50.9 percent from the floor, ending Virginia’s streak of holding 44 straight ACC opponents under 50 percent.
  • Virginia outrebounded Duke 35-34, but shot 26-63 from the floor including just 3-13 from 3-point range.

  • Virginia has won its first seven true road games of a season for the first time since 1980-81 (won first 10 road games).
  • The Cavaliers are 9-0 away from home this season.
  • Virginia is 11-2 in ACC road games over the past two seasons, the most road wins in the conference over that period.
  • The Cavaliers have four true road wins over teams currently ranked in the AP poll, most in the nation.
  • UVa’s seven-game road winning streak is tied with Stephen F. Austin, Murray State and Rider for the longest active streak nationally.
