Four people are dead – two students and two teachers – in a school shooting in Georgia on Wednesday.
The shooter, identified as Colt Gray, 14, is in custody, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Gray is a student at Apalachee High School, which is located in Winder, a city of roughly 18,000 people about 40 miles northeast of Atlanta.
The shooting, which also injured nine people, was reported at 10:20 a.m.
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said Gray surrendered immediately when confronted by the school resource officer.
“Obviously the shooter was armed, and our school resource officer engaged him, and the shooter quickly realized that if he did not give up, that it would end with an OIS – an officer-involved shooting,” Smith said.
Gray will be tried as an adult in connection with the shooting, according to Chris Hosey, the director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, speaking at a news conference at the school.
