Former VMI catcher Matt Winn starts 2016 with Double-A Richmond

Former VMI Keydet catcher and Richmond native Matt Winn has made the preliminary roster of the AA Richmond Flying Squirrels, according to information released by the organization Saturday afternoon.

Winn is one of three catchers on the roster and has the least amount of professional experience, after being drafted just last season and having just 36 games in the pro ranks. He hit .216 with two home runs and 17 RBI combined between the Giants’ Arizona League affiliate and Augusta of the South Atlantic League last year, before getting 10 at-bats during MLB spring training this season.

The Flying Squirrels have until Thursday to submit a final 25-man roster.
