Former Rams standout Darius Theus returns to VCU basketball coaching staff

vcu ramsFormer standout VCU point guard Darius Theus is returning to his alma mater as director of player development on the staff of VCU head coach Mike Rhoades.

“Everybody here at VCU is excited to get Darius back in our basketball family, and to see him everyday and watch him with our players every day is very exciting,” Rhoades said.

Theus played at VCU from 2009-2013. He joins Rhoades’ staff following one season as director of player development at Texas, where he helped the Longhorns to a 19-15 mark and an NCAA Tournament berth. Theus had previously served as VCU’s director of student-athlete development during the 2016-2017 season, when the Rams won 26 games reached the NCAA Tournament.

As a player, Theus appeared in three NCAA Tournaments with VCU, including the Rams’ historic Final Four run in 2011. The Norfolk native ranks third in school history with 237 steals and sixth on VCU’s all-time assists list with 462. His 85 steals as a senior in 2012-13 rank fourth in school single-season history.

In 2012, Theus was named CAA Tournament MVP after leading the Rams to the title, including a 16-point, 5-assist, 5-steal effort in a 59-56 victory over Drexel in the championship game. Theus delivered perhaps his most memorable moment in a VCU uniform in the first round of the NCAA Tournament that year, when he hit a floater with 18 seconds left to seal a 62-59 upset of fifth-seeded Wichita State in Portland, Ore.

The Third Team All-CAA pick in 2012, Theus later played professionally in Holland and Germany.
