FMS rolls over Southern Tech Prep, 80-53

The first time Southern Tech Prep was in Waynesboro, the Wildcats jumped out to a 13-2 lead before the Caissons were able to rally. There was no need for a rally from the postgrads Monday night.

FMS jumped out to a 16-0 cushion six minutes in and coasted from there to an 80-53 win.

Defense was the key. The Caissons (12-4) had come in having given up an average of 94 points per game in a three-game stretch that included back-to-back losses to Massanutten and Hargrave.

“Our defense was a lot better tonight,” assistant coach Brian Greene said. “We had a rough stretch there against Hargrave and Massanutten. We really focused on defense. We stepped it up against Bluefield a little, and tonight we stepped it up a lot.”

Southern Tech had played well in its last trip to FMS, eventually falling 95-75 in a game that felt closer than that most of the way. This was was over early, with the ‘Cats never getting closer than 13 after the initial 16-0 Fishburne run.

The Caissons led 44-23 at the half, and the margin was no closer than 21 the rest of the way.

Khalil Alford (a Rider signee) and Jake Wiegand (an Illinois-Chicago signee) each had 17 points to lead Fishburne, which won’t play again until a Jan. 10 tilt against Southern Virginia College.

“We can spend time with family, but I hope we all work hard,” said Alford of the nearly month-long break.
