FMS postgrad hoops team to teach basketball, life lessons to Y kids

Chris Graham

The nationally ranked postgraduate basketball team from Fishburne Military School will be holding a skills clinic for Waynesboro YMCA youth basketball on Tuesday, Feb. 22, beginning at 6 p.m.

The clinic was initiated by FMS Superintendent Col. Rick Zinser as a community-outreach effort for the postgrad-hoops program, which has 14 players committed to Division I college-basketball programs for the 2011-2012 season.

Y executive director Jeff Fife, who also coaches a team in the Y youth-basketball league, is enthusiastic about the impact the clinic will have on young players at the Y.

“It’s great having the athletes from Fishburne partner with our youth basketball program. I’m actually more excited by the advice they’ll deliver about being excellent kids off the court, not just on it, and the importance staying in school,” Fife said. “This is a great opportunity for our kids to interact with strong Division I talent and look at life skills learned through basketball.”

Fishburne postgrad coach Ed Huckaby and his staff will be on hand as well to help push that message. Huckaby is in his second year at Fishburne after stints as a college assistant at Hampton and Wright State.

Huckaby and members of the Caissons basketball team will then lead Y players through a series of basketball skills stations.
