Fishburne wrestlers sweep home tri-meet

Caissons improve to 17-4 on season

fishburne wrestlingFishburne wrestlers cruised to a tri-sweep over Grace Christian School (66-12) and local public school Buffalo Gap (57-12) at a home tri-meet on Thursday.

Both Grace and Gap could not field full teams, allowing Fishburne to win many matches by forfeit. The Caissons came into this meet short some starters, and this allowed some of the younger wrestlers to step in and step up.

In the Grace match, the Caissons jumped to an 18-0 lead before Grace got on the board in the heavyweight match. Grace closed the lead to 18-12, but it was all a Caissons storm after that.  In a much anticipated match, 120-pound junior Thomas Fosdick (Staunton, VA) locked horns with the state’s number 4-ranked wrestler, Jonathan Zodhiates. Fosdick is currently ranked 8th in the state, but had upset Zodhiates in overtime two weeks ago at the News Leader Invitational Tournament. In a tough defensive battle, Fosdick pulled out a 2-1 double overtime win.

“We worked all week for this match to counter the things that Jonathan likes to do,” said head coach Terry Waters. “Thomas wrestled an extremely smart match, and his heart and conditioning won it in overtime.”

Fishburne sophomore Matthew Farrar (Waynesboro, VA) is ranked 4th in the state and picked up two pins to improve to 25-1 on the season. Junior Matthew Sim (Henrico, VA) also picked up two wins.  “Farrar and Fosdick are practice partners and Sim works in with them,” noted Waters.  “These guys are three of the hardest workers on the team, and it shows in competition.”

“The team wrestled well,” continued Waters. “Our goal is to peak at the right time, and these young men are working toward it.”

The Caissons are back in action Saturday when they travel to Orange County High School for a large multi-team tournament.
