In its first conference meet of the season, Fishburne Military School wrestlers topped Virginia Episcopal School and host Roanoke Catholic Thursday evening, coming in a close second to Covenant.

The Caissons faced Covenant first, in a nail-biter that came down to the last match. In spite of wins by pins from junior Thomas Fosdick (120), senior Christopher Ross (182) and senior Aiden Davis (198), Fishburne came in to the last match tied with Covenant at 36.  The final heavyweight match pitted senior Shaheen Alfarhan against Covenant’s Rick Weaver, with Alfarhan dropping a tough match. The final team score: Covenant 42, Fishburne 36.

Alfarhan came back to win by pin against Roanoke Catholic, helping Fishburne wrestlers easily handle the Celtics, 52-29. Other wins in this match came from senior Jakob Harrison (152). The Caissons finished up with a 72-9 win over Virginia Episcopal. In the final team match-up, Fishburne wins by pin came from Fosdick, sophomore Matt Farrar (132), junior Jacob Randall (170) and Ross.

“The long Christmas layoff hurt us and we were rough in the first match against a tough team. Even so, we were in it to the end and came very close to winning,” said Fishburne head coach Terry Waters. “We bounced back and wrestled well in the last two matches. Thomas Fosdick and Jakob Harrison wrestled very well tonight and I think we will be fine come conference tournament time.”

Fishburne competes next in the News Leader Invitational Tournament at Riverheads High School on Saturday.
