Ed Huckaby learned basketball as a youngster at skills camps at YMCAs and Boys Clubs.

“I started out playing that way, watching Walt Frazier and those guys play when I was a kid, pretending that I was them,” said Huckaby, the head coach of the nationally ranked Fishburne Military School postgrad basketball program.

Huckaby served as the master of ceremonies for a skills camp put on by his players and assistant coaches for more than 100 youngsters in the youth basketball program at the Waynesboro YMCA on Monday night.

The Caissons put the Y through the basic elements of a PG practice, running one of the team’s basic offensive sets and working on fundamental elements of the game, including dribbling, passing, shooting and rebounding.

“Some of the things that we’ve been teaching them for the past few months and few years now, there’s going to be repetition of the same things that we’ve been telling them, so it’s good reinforcement,” said John Spears, the youth sports director at the YMCA.

And in the process, the FMS program may have gained a few new fans.

“Everyone’s excited to have these Fishburne kids here and having the opportunity to play with these phenomenal athletes, to learn a little bit from them, and just hang out with these kids,” said Jeff Fife, the executive director of the Y. “These are all Division I college kids, and it’s great having our kids out here to partner with them and play with them.”
