Fishburne PG basketball team headed to National Prep Tournament

The top-seeded Fishburne Military School basketball team is on its way to the 2013 National Prep Tournament in New Haven, Conn., with play beginning on Tuesday.

FMS (27-6) will take on #4 seed Northfield Mount Hermon (Mass.) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The tournament is being held at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven.

For Windsor, Conn., native Zach Lewis, the homecoming is nice, but the focus is on bringing home the program’s first national title.

“We’ve got a team full of great guys, so that was our goal from day one, to make it to the national tournament, so we’re happy we get to do that,” said Lewis, a Canisius signee who is the team’s leading scorer (17.7 points per game) and was named the team most valuable player at an awards ceremony last week.

FMS owns wins in the 2012-2013 season over three of the teams in the eight-school national tournament field – Northfield Mount Hermon, Hargrave and Massanutten.

But those wins mean nothing when play tips off on Tuesday.

“We’re taking it one game at a time. We’re just trying to get a W each day. We’re real excited to have this chance to win the national championship,” Lewis said.
