uva field hockeyThe No. 14 UVA field hockey team (4-4, 0-1 ACC) lost 8-0 to No. 5 Connecticut (7-0) on Sunday (Sept. 18) at University Hall Turf Field in Charlottesville, Va.

UConn’s Charlotte Veitner scored six of the Huskies’ eight goals. Virginia sophomore goalie Carrera Lucas (Brooklandville, Md.) had six saves for the Cavaliers.

“No team likes to have a game like this,” said Virginia head coach Michele Madison. “Connecticut just kept it simple and they were very effective. There are some things we need to work out and will be addressing those things in practice this week. We will bounce back from this.”

Vietner scored the Huskies’ first goal 58 seconds into the game and added a second midway through the second half to give UConn a 2-0 lead at the break. Veitner reached a hat trick eight minutes into the second half, scoring on a breakaway, and then also scored the next three goals to put UConn up 7-0 with 14 minutes remaining. Olivia Bolles added an eighth goal for the team with less than three minutes remaining.

Connecticut held a 17-11 advantage in shots. Of the Cavaliers’ 11 shots, two were on goal with Nina Klein making both saves. Each team took three penalty corners, with UConn scoring off one.

The game was Virginia’s third of the week and second-in-a-row against a top-10 team after downing Liberty, 2-1, on Monday and No. 10 Princeton, 2-0, on Friday.

Virginia will be on the road next week, beginning on Friday, Sept. 23 with a 6 p.m. Atlantic Coast Conference match at No. 18 Boston College, followed by a Sunday, Sept. 25 game at Fairfield. Virginia returns home to host Wake Forest on Friday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m. at Turf Field. Admission is free for all of Virginia’s regular-season home games.
