Fading Nationals lose again: Giants beat Strasburg, 3-1

Stephen Strasburg was good, but the Washington Nationals’ bats were, again, not good.

Ryan Vogelsong and three San Francisco relievers held the Nats to five hits in a 3-1 win Thursday night. Vogelsong (8-8, 4.15 ERA) gave up a run on three hits in five innings, striking out eight and walking four, pitching into and out of trouble, but once the Giants pen took over, it was lights out.

The trio of Hunter Strickland, Sergio Romo and Santiago Casilla limited Washington to two baserunners over four innings.

Strasburg (6-6, 4.62 ERA) gave up two runs on seven hits in six innings, striking out eight and walking two.

He was staked to a 1-0 lead on a first-inning homer by Yunel Escobar, but the Giants responded with two in the bottom of the first, on RBI singles by Matt Duffy and Buster Posey.

A Brandon Bell RBI single in the seventh added an insurance run for the Giants (61-53).

Washington (58-56) has been in a free-fall since the All-Star break. Thursday’s loss drops the Nats to a 10-17 mark since the break, and they are now four and a half games behind the streaking New York Mets (63-52) in the National League East.
