Events offer safe disposal for leftover pesticides

newspaperThe Virginia Pesticide Collection Program has announced dates and locations for the safe disposal of pesticides.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services program, which collects unwanted, outdated and banned pesticides, provides the service at no cost to participants.

“The pesticide disposal program helps farmers conveniently dispose of unused and old pesticides in an environmentally sound manner,” said Tony Banks, a commodity marketing specialist for Virginia Farm Bureau Federation. “It’s not uncommon for a partial container or two of pesticide to be left at the end of a growing season, but don’t throw it away. If it’s not used during the following seasons, it needs to be discarded appropriately. The program has been around for many years and provides a real service to the farming community and the environment.”

This year, the disposal program will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the following Virginia locations:

  • Sept. 17, Burkeville Southern States, 105 N. Agnew St., Burkeville
  • Sept. 18, Martinsville Southern States, 3200 Virginia Ave., Collinsville
  • Sept. 19, Farmville Southern States, 182 Smi Way, Farmville
  • Sept. 20, Lynchburg Livestock Market, 243 Livestock Road, Rustburg
  • Sept. 24, Meherrin Ag and Chemical, 1409 Vincent Store Road, Charlotte Courthouse
  • Sept. 25, Crop Production Service, 501 W. Danville St., South Hill
  • Sept. 26, Ag Development Center, 1001 Farm Way Lane, Scottsburg
  • Sept. 27, Chatham Southern States, 968 Halifax Road, Chatham

Participants need to return a pesticide disposal registration form 30 days ahead of the collection date. The form is available at vdacs.virginia.gov/pdf/disposalregistration.pdf.

If participants cannot safely contain unwanted pesticides for transport, the disposal contractor may arrange assistance on a case-by-case basis. Only pesticides will be accepted. For program information, call the collection program office at 804-786-3798.
