ESPN correspondent to speak at Bridgewater

Tom Farrey, an Emmy award-winning correspondent for ESPN and author of Game On: The All-American Race to Make Champions of Our Children, will speak at Bridgewater College on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 7:30 p.m. in Cole Hall.

The program, sponsored by the W. Harold Row Endowed Lecture Series is free and open to the public.

Farrey’s work over the years has explored the connections between sport and society’s themes of education, globalization, technology, race and ethics.

For a futuristic look into the world of talent identification, Farrey had his one-year-old son genetically screened for athletic traits; his ESPNThe Magazine account served as the inspiration for Game On, published in May 2008.

In 2011 Farrey became director of the Aspen Institute’s Sports & Society program, a vehicle for convening leaders and fostering dialogue around topics of critical importance. The program helps inspire solutions to major issues so that sport can best serve the public interest, starting with the health needs of children and communities.

Farrey joined ESPN in 1996 after eight years withThe Seattle Times. While at the Times, he covered the NBA, NFL and events including the Olympics, Super Bowl and World Cup.

His stories have appeared on the ESPN newsmagazines Outside the Lines and E:60, as well as “SportsCenter,” ESPN.com, ESPNThe Magazine and ABC’s “World News Tonight” and “Good Morning America.” He won two Emmy awards for Outstanding Sports Journalism and top national honors from Sigma Delta Chi/Society of Professional Journalists, the Asian American Journalists Association, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association and the Women’s Sports Foundation.

He was one of seven journalists selected in 2007 among the “100 Most Influential Sports Educators in America” by the Institute for International Sport at the University of Rhode Island.

His reports have appeared in Business Week, the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, St. Petersburg Times and the Miami Herald.
