Effective March 23, Free State Road in Albemarle County is one-way

AFP

road-work-headerOn Monday, March 23, the Virginia Department of Transportation will post highway signs to convert a 0.1-mile segment of Route 651 (Free State Road) in Albemarle County from carrying two-way traffic to eastbound traffic only.

The one-way designation will be in force between Route 1428 (Huntington Road) and Route 651 (Belvedere Boulevard), where a one-lane bridge over Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks currently limits the flow of traffic on Free State Road.

The restriction comes as a result of a significant increase in traffic on the adjoining leg of Route 651, named Wakefield Road, which together with Free State Road is being used as a shortcut to Route 631 (Rio Road East). Though it serves less than 15 homes, more than 800 vehicles are driving on Wakefield Road daily, according to a September 2014 traffic count.

Westbound motorists affected by the one-way designation should use Belvedere Road as an alternate route to reach Rio Road and other points east.
