A five-vehicle wreck on Interstate 495 this morning was caused by a driver with outstanding warrants who refused to stop for a Virginia State Police trooper.
According to VSP, the trooper attempted a traffic stop for a violation of the hands-free cell phone law on the I-495 Beltway northbound near Braddock Road at 8:54 a.m.
The vehicle also showed outstanding warrants for the suspected driver in Fairfax and Prince William counties. The driver’s name has not been released.
The vehicle refused to stop, and a pursuit was initiated.
The suspect vehicle continued at a high rate of speed along the right shoulder of the interstate.
The trooper then stopped the pursuit because of safety concerns, according to VSP.
When the suspect vehicle reached the access ramp to Braddock Road, it struck multiple vehicles and overturned. The driver then exited the vehicle and fled on foot.
A perimeter was established, and the suspect driver was quickly taken into custody without further incident.
Four vehicles were damaged in the crash with the suspect’s vehicle. There were some minor injuries to some of the occupants.
The suspect driver also suffered injuries in the crash and was taken to an area hospital.
Charges are pending, according to VSP.
