UVA Football has itself another anonymous donor, this one pledging to match every dollar contributed to the Football Enhancement Fund, up to $3 million.
The latest donor is focused on nutrition, per the press release announcing the gift sent out on Thursday, so, protein shakes and thick steaks for everybody.
The press release actually included this sentence:
The donor highly values expanding nutritional resources for the football program housed in the Molly and Robert Hardie Football Operations Center that opened earlier in the year.
“I am extremely grateful for this level of commitment from our donors and their investment in the well-being of our scholar-athletes,” coach Tony Elliott said in a quote included in the press release.
“I am thrilled for Virginia Football to benefit from enhanced nutritional resources that fuel performance and recovery as we build the model program for long-term success on and off the field,” Elliott said.
Elliott, or somebody on his behalf, had to put serious thought to coming up with a quote for a release on this bit about trying to come up with $6 million to feed the UVA Football team.
Let that sink in.
My wife writes stories about how our local communities have serious issues to address with homelessness, and I’m writing about millions going to feed already well-fed D1 football players.

“We are incredibly thankful for this amazing commitment that continues the momentum of philanthropic support for Virginia Athletics,” said Kevin Miller, executive director of the Virginia Athletics Foundation, the other UVA Athletics official quoted in the release.
Nothing, that is, from Carla Williams, the AD.
That’s probably for the best.
