Detroit avoids sweep: Tops Baltimore, 6-5

baltimore oriolesJ.D. Martinez and Miguel Cabrera hit solo homers on back-to-back pitches in the eighth to lift Detroit to a 6-5 win over Baltimore on Sunday.

Martinez hit a two-strike, two-out homer off Darren O’Day (2-1, 3.00 ERA) to tie the game at 5-5, and Cabrera followed with a tie-breaking solo shot.

The O’s (23-13) went down in order in the eighth and ninth.

Manny Machado hit a two-run homer, his 11th of the season, in the fifth.

Adam Jones and Jonathan School each had two hits on the day.

Kevin Gausman was touched up for a season-high 10 hits in five innings of work in his start for Baltimore, allowing four runs, striking out one and walking two.
