Dems: Senate Republicans defeat, divide on same-sex marriage

AFP

state-capitol2In an afternoon meeting Tuesday, Republicans on the Senate Committee on Privileges & Elections defeated a resolution to formally repeal the Marshall-Newman ban on same-sex marriage (SJ 214), which was ruled unconstitutional last year in federal court. A resolution to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (SJ 216) passed after one Republican joined all seven Democrats in support. Both measures were patroned by Sen. Adam Ebbin (D – Alexandria).

Said Sen. Ebbin, “I am deeply disappointed that so many of my Republican colleagues chose to stand against equality for both women and LGBT Virginians today. The law needs to recognize what most of us already know: all Virginians deserve equal treatment.”

Said Sen. Rosalyn Dance (D – Petersburg), “I was extremely pleased today to join my fellow Democrats in support of the Equal Rights Amendment. I would like to thank the one Republican who voted with us. I only wish that Republicans had joined us in supporting repeal of the Marshall-Newman marriage ban. All of us are created equal, and it’s long past time for our laws to reflect that truth.”.
