The Richmond Football team brought its 2011 spring season to a close Saturday afternoon, hosting the annual Spring Game for the first time at Robins Stadium. The Defense prevailed, 54-26, using a modified scoring system.
Rising junior QB John Laub finished the afternoon 21-of-30 passing for 172 yards and a touchdown, while rising sophomore James McKinney carried 22 times for 59 yards. Rising sophomore WR Ben Edwards reeled in seven catches for 81 yards.
Laub connected with freshman Stephen Barnette for the game’s lone offensive touchdown – a 65-yard pass down the sidelines after the ball was deflected in the flat.
Wil Kamin made good on a 42-yard field goal, and sophomore Wayne Pettus returned a punt 52-yard on the game’s final play.
But the Defense owned the afternoon. Rising sophomore LB Eric Wright finished with a game-high 12 tackles and knocked down two passes, while sophomore LB Walt Sparks had nine stops. Rising junior S Cooper Taylor, who transferred from Georgia Tech this winter, had three tackles with two for loss.
Freshman LB Sean Ryan finished with six tackles, three of which were for loss. Freshman DL Joey Landess had a pair of sacks. Pettus had five tackles and knocked down three passes.
An interception by junior DB Evan Joseph was the game’s lone turnover.
A number of skill-position players did not play in the game, including rising senior QB Aaron Corp, who continues to rehab from a season-ending knee injury suffered in the fifth game of 2010.
Prior to the game, second-year head coach Latrell Scott handed out the Spring Awards. Rising junior DB Darryl Hamilton earned the Weight Room’s Most Improved; Laub won the Weight Room’s Top Performer; sophomore DL Kerry Wynn was named the Spring’s Defensive Impact Player; sophomore RB Jovan Smith was named the Offensive Impact Player.
The Defense won last season’s Spring Game, 54-23, using the same scoring format.
