Cuccinelli unveils K-12 education plan

cuccinelli-header2Ken Cuccinelli today unveiled his K-12 Education Plan: Putting Our Kids First at Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School in Richmond.

“It’s not good enough if the children who live in the right zip code are excelling in the classroom and moving on to college and graduate schools, while families trapped within a low-income community have a mediocre education at best and a failing school at worst,” said Cuccinelli, the Republican nominee for governor.

“We need to implement an education plan based on the idea that every Virginia child deserves a high-quality education—no matter where they live. I believe one of the most important things we can do to make sure Virginia remains one of the best places to start a business or raise a family is to make sure that all of our students can attend a good school with highly motivated teachers,” Cuccinelli said.

The Cuccinelli plan includes provisions allowing for the establishment of charter schools, private school vouchers and a proposed constitutional amendment clearing the way for public dollars to be funneled to religious schools.

“From releasing a tax cut plan that would force dramatic cuts in education, to calling for the abolition of the U.S. Department of Education, Ken Cuccinelli’s education agenda has always had more to do with his extreme agenda than what’s best for Virginia,” said Brian Coy, a spokesman for the Democratic Party of Virginia.

“Virginians need a governor who recognizes the importance of public education to preparing students to compete and lead in the economy of the future. We can’t afford a Governor who views Virginia’s education system as a launching pad for his extreme agenda,” Coy said.
