Constance Burch: Colleges and money

It is a very sad commentary on the quality of U.S. education that the major responsibility of college and university presidents is to raise money. One would hope that academic quality and perhaps care for their students and faculty might be major concerns.

Where is it written that colleges and universities must continually expand? Larger does not equate to better. We need vocational learning institutions, but there is also a place for pure science, for research, for the classics, and the joy of learning.

The marketplace and corporations have come to dominate our politics and our government. Are their interests now to control our colleges and universities?
