The Washington Commanders are trading veteran running back Brian Robinson to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2026 sixth-round pick.
Robinson, a third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, had been a consistent producer in the backfield in his three years in DC, putting up 797 yards on the ground in his rookie season, in 2022, with 733 yards in 2023 and a career-high 799 yards in 2024, which also saw him average a career-best 4.3 yards per carry and score a career-best eight TDs.
I don’t get this one, but Commanders coach Dan Quinn and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury are apparently ready to go with a running back-by-committee, with 2023 sixth-round pick Chris Rodriguez (420 yards, four TDs as a backup in DC in 2023 and 2024), eight-year veteran Jeremy McNichols (261 yards, four TDs in 2024) and 2025 seventh-round pick Jacory Croskey-Merritt splitting reps as the featured backs, and nine-year veteran Austin Ekeler (367 yards rushing, 366 yards receiving, four TDs in 2024) as the third-down back.
“Going into training camp, we really thought this was a deep room. There would be real competition. We knew this was one of our strengths going into training camp,” Quinn said Monday night after Washington’s 31-17 loss to Cincinnati in the Commanders’ second game of the 2025 preseason.
