bridgewater collegePainters Cleveland Morris from Staunton, Va., and Elizabeth Sauder from Rockbridge County, Va., will exhibit “Inside/Outside” March 14- April 8, in the Cleo Driver Miller Art Gallery at Bridgewater College.

An artists’ reception will be held 5-7 p.m. Monday, March 14, with an artists’ talk at 5:30 p.m. Both events will be in the Miller Art Gallery. The talk, reception and exhibition are open to the public at no charge.

A still-life artist, Morris is exhibiting works he created both inside and outside his home.

“Although all my work is based on observation – on externals – it originates with an idea inside of me,” Morris said. “Once an idea has started to excite or challenge me, I go looking for subject matter, whether in the aisles of a grocery store or in an Italian piazza.”

In the spring of 2008, Morris served as a judge for the annual Bridgewater Juried Student Show.

Sauder is a plein air painter. “I paint outdoors, in front of, and in emotional response to the landscape,” she said. “I paint as a way to explore and become intimate with a place and to better understand the visual and environmental phenomena surrounding it.”

Her work consists of small oil paintings that capture the ebb and flow of the country life from haying season to the bright lights of the local firemen’s carnival.

The Miller Gallery is located on the second floor of the Alexander Mack Memorial Library. The Gallery is open 8 a.m. to midnight MondayThursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 to 11 p.m. Sunday.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to more than 1,800 undergraduate students.
