City of Staunton preparing for winter storm

Due to an anticipated winter storm, Thursday’s refuse and recycling pickup at residences and in the Central Business District have been rescheduled for Saturday.

Additionally, the City will prohibit parking on Beverley Street, between Lewis Street and Market Street, from 12 a.m. (midnight) Thursday, March 5, until further notice.  “No Parking” signs will be posted on Beverley Street. The temporary parking restrictions are intended to facilitate the city’s snow removal operations, given the anticipated heavy snowfall.

For the convenience of downtown residents and City snow removal crews, the City will suspend parking fees at the New Street and Johnson Street parking garages, effective at 5 p.m. today until further notice. Downtown residents and patrons may park, without charge, in both garages.  Residents who ordinarily use on-street parking in the Downtown Central Business District are encouraged to park in the parking garages to clear streets as much as possible for the city’s snow removal operations.

SNOW REMOVAL: Property owners and occupants are required by Staunton City Code to remove snow and ice from adjacent sidewalks in a timely fashion:

It shall be the duty of every person occupying any property abutting on a paved sidewalk to remove snow, sleet or ice from such sidewalk, within six hours after the snow or sleet ceases to fall or the ice ceases to form, unless the snow or sleet fell or the ice formed during the night, in which case it shall be removed by 12:00 noon on the following day. If any such property is unoccupied, it shall be the duty of the owner or the person having charge thereof to comply with the requirements of this section. (Code 1964, § 25-7; Code 1985, § 26-15).

The Staunton Fire and Rescue Department also encourages residents living near a fire hydrant to clear a three-foot perimeter around the hydrant, in addition to clearing a path from the hydrant to the street, to ensure ease of access during a fire emergency.
