A juvenile girl was struck by an SUV on Saturday evening on private property in Augusta County, and the driver fled after the accident.

The juvenile was flown to UVA Medical Center for treatment of serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

A Craigsville man has been charged in the hit-and-run investigation that occurred Aug. 9 at approximately 5 p.m. at a residence on North Chestnut Avenue.

John Randozzo Jr., 56, contacted law enforcement and was taken into custody on Monday.

According to Virginia State Police, a Ford Expedition driven by Randozzo was backing a small utility trailer inside a yard at the residence when a juvenile female ran from within the yard to the path of the trailer. Randozzo was unable to stop, according to police, and the trailer struck the child. Randozzo then left the scene.

The relationship of Randozzo to the child was not disclosed by VSP.

State Police have charged Randozzo with one felony count of hit and run and for driving on a suspended driver’s license.

The crash remains under investigation.

The Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office and Augusta County Sheriff’s Office assisted VSP in the incident.
