Charlottesville Reading Series announces April authors

newspaperThe Charlottesville Reading Series will host a poetry and prose reading on Friday, April 20, from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM at New Dominion Bookshop (404 East Main St).

The event will feature in-person readings by Angie Hogan and Jeffery Renard Allen and is free to attend. Complimentary refreshments will be available at intermission.

Angie Hogan’s poems have appeared in The Southern Poetry AnthologyThe Antioch ReviewThe Cincinnati ReviewThe Hudson ReviewPloughsharesSubtropicsQuarterly WestThe Threepenny ReviewThird CoastWestern Humanities Review, and elsewhere. She has produced two limited-edition artist’s books, Rosemary & Rue and, with illustrator Roger Williams, Mother ≥ Bear. Originally from a small town in East Tennessee, she lives in Albemarle County and is an acquiring editor at the University of Virginia Press.

Jeffery Renard Allen is the author of five books, including two collections of poetry, Harbors and Spirits and Stellar Places, and the novels Rails Under My Back, which won The Chicago Tribune’s Heartland Prize for Fiction, and Song of the Shank, which was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award and nominated for the Dublin Literary Prize. His short story collection Holding Pattern won the Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence. His other honors include a Whiting Writers’ Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a residency at the New York Public Library’s Center for Scholars and Writers, and a residency at the Bellagio Center in Italy. His stories, poems, reviews, and essays have appeared in numerous periodicals, including The New York Times Book ReviewGranta, The Los Angeles TimesThe Evergreen ReviewOxford AmericanTin HouseCallaloo, and Book Forum. Founded by Julia Kudravetz and Amie Whittemore in 2014, the Charlottesville Reading Series presents in-person readings of poetry and prose in a monthly event for community members in Charlottesville.
