bridgewaterCharlottesville, Va., artist Isabelle Abbot will exhibit paintings from the central Virginia Piedmont in the Cleo Driver Miller Art Gallery at Bridgewater College Sept. 22 – Oct. 15.

Abbot will present an artist’s talk at 4 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 22, in the Boitnott Room. An artist’s reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Miller Gallery. The talk, reception and exhibition are open to the public at no charge.

In the show, “Knowing a Place,” process and product share the spotlight revealing the character of the local landscape, as well as Abbot’s relationship to that place.

“My work grows from using the activity of painting to understand my environment and how I come to form an attachment to a place,” Abbot said. “The paintings themselves are the offspring of this investigation.”

Growing up in Crozet, Va., Abbot spent time on her family’s mountain property. She formed a deep attachment to the region that she has carried with her throughout life.

Abbot has shown her paintings in solo exhibitions in Charlottesville, Crozet and Farmville, Va.

She earned a B.A. in studio art from the University of Virginia and an M.F.A. in painting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

The Miller Gallery is located on the second floor of the Alexander Mack Memorial Library. The Gallery is open 8 a.m. to midnight Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 to 11 p.m. Sunday.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to approximately 1,800 undergraduate students.
