Story by Chris Graham

NASCAR celebrities, a former NFL great, a supermodel and others will be making a stop in Staunton on Tuesday in association with a charity ride across America.

“The incredible support from our dedicated fans, sponsors and riders have made the Ride what it is today,” said Kyle Petty, the NASCAR star who initiated the Chick-fil-A Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America in 1995 to raise money for the Randleman, N.C.,-based Victory Junction Gang Camp and other selected children’s charities.

Now in its 13th year, the charity ride has logged more than 45,000 miles, encompassed more than 5,000 riders and raised more than $9 million for its charities.

This year’s ride – which will make a stop at Shenandoah Harley-Davidson in Staunton at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday – will feature Kyle Petty, his father, NASCAR legend Richard Petty, race-car drivers Harry Gant, Steve Park and Burney Lamar, in addition to University of Georgia and Dallas Cowboys star Herschel Walker and supermodel Niki Taylor.

“After 12 years, my wife Pattie and I are still amazed by the individuals across the nation whose generosity touches the lives of deserving children and their families. We can’t wait to shake things up a bit this year and travel the East Coast – and to see our fans, who give us the energy and motivation to keep riding,” Kyle Petty said.

More information on the ride is available online at www.chick-fil-akylepettycharityride.com.
