Campbell County: Driver charged in hit-and-run that killed Brookneal man on Route 501

A Gladys man has been charged with reckless driving and felony hit-and-run in a Campbell County crash that killed a Brookneal man on Saturday night.

Leonard L. Crews, of Gladys, was located several hours after the 9:53 p.m. crash on Route 501, according to a report from Virginia State Police.

According to VSP, Willie Merricks, 21, of Brookneal, was walking northbound on Route 501 near Phelps Creek Road when he was struck by an SUV that did not remain on scene.

The investigation shows the vehicle had travelled out of its marked lane when it struck the pedestrian

The crash remains under investigation.
