Visiting Bucknell scored the game’s final three runs and beat Richmond, 5-3, Saturday at Pitt Field. Robby Massar had two hits, homered and scored twice for the Spiders.
Richmond (3-4) led 1-0 in the first after Massar’s home run and owned a 3-2 advantage in the fourth inning, but Bucknell pushed the tying run across in the fifth, took the lead for good in the sixth and tacked on insurance in the ninth.
Sophomore Jacob Mayers, who is hitting a team-leading .583 for the Spiders, did not play Saturday due to illness.
Jack Boehm pitched shutout ball over the final five innings, allowing just three hits with three strikeouts and no walks to earn the victory for the Bison (1-5).
After Bucknell scored twice in the third on back-to-back solo homers to seize a 2-1 lead, Richmond loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth thanks to three-consecutive walks. Ryan Mallory knotted the game with his one-out sacrifice fly and Derek Boliek’s run-scoring single through the left side made it 3-2.
But Bucknell drew even again in the fifth when, with two outs, Dave Duffett scored from first when a fly ball was dropped in right field. Doug Shribman’s two-out RBI single in the sixth inning stood as the eventual game-winner.
Starter Anthony Cafagna gave the Spiders six innings, allowing eight hits and four runs (three earned) and was tagged the loss.
