The George S. Aldhizer II Department of Economics and Business at Bridgewater College recognized students for excellence during the annual college awards ceremony on April 22.
Business administration majors Tyler Olsen, a junior from Shenandoah, Va., and Chad Whitzel, a senior from Easton, Md., each received a Robert L. Hueston Endowed Scholarship. The award honors the contributions Robert L. Hueston made to the study of accounting at Bridgewater College while a member of the faculty from 1953 – 86. Olsen and Whitzel each received a $4,950 scholarship for the 2018-2019 academic year.
Madeleine Sliwoski, a senior business administration major from Staunton, Va., received a $2,880 scholarship from the David E. Will Endowed Scholarship Fund for the Support of Public Accounting. Will, a 1983 graduate, is a partner and certified public accountant with the accounting firm of Mitchell Wiggins and Company LLP in Richmond, Va. The award goes to a student with a concentration in accounting who intends to pursue a career as a certified public accountant with a public accounting firm.
During the 2018 spring semester, Sliwoski and Whitzel completed internships at the accounting firm of Young, Nicholas, Branner & Phillips L.L.P.
The David G. and Margie Messick Smith Endowed Scholarship was presented to Bailey Kratz, a junior business administration major with a minor in economics, from Telford, Pa. The scholarship, which is awarded to a rising senior who has demonstrated exceptional promise in the field of management, was established by two Bridgewater graduates in memory of their grandparents, David G. and Margie Messick Smith. The award carries a $1,100 scholarship for the 2018-19 academic year.
Renee Lynn Eshenauer, a business administration major, from Steelton, Pa., and Zellie Wothers, an economics major, from Sykesville, Md., each received the Outstanding Senior Award for scholarly achievement and leadership – Eshenauer in business administration and Wothers in economics.
All six award winners are members of Sigma Beta Delta, an international business, management and administration honor society.
Following graduation on May 5, Eshenauer will be an associate underwriter at United Concordia Insurance Company.
Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to more than 1,900 undergraduate students.
