Bridgewater College art professor to exhibit work in Miller Art Gallery

bridgewaterMichael Hough, associate professor of art, will exhibit “Out of the Boxes” in the Cleo Driver Miller Art Gallery at Bridgewater College Aug. 24 – Sept. 17.

An artist’s reception will be held 5-7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, with an artist’s talk at 5:30 p.m. Both events will be in the Miller Art Gallery. The talk, reception and exhibition are open to the public at no charge.

Hough, who has been creating ceramic and steel sculptures for the past 28 years, considers himself a collector. “Gathered in my studio, office and home are thousands of found objects,” he said. “There are bones, machine elements, furniture parts, toys and found ceramic objects. Each has a story.” His sculptures, vessels and wall reliefs come directly from these found objects.

The large works are bigger than life—dwarfing the viewer. The wall pieces are based on the knick-knack shelf—a gathering place for the strange, the sentimental and the kitsch.

In July, Hough was awarded Best in Show for his sculpture, “Perched,” at the 51st annual Bath County Art Show in Hot Springs, Va.

Hough earned his master of fine arts from the Rhode Island School of Design in ceramics. He joined the faculty at Bridgewater College in 1997.

The Miller Gallery is located on the second floor of the Alexander Mack Memorial Library. The Gallery is open 8 a.m. to midnight MondayThursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 to 11 p.m. Sunday.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to approximately 1,800 undergraduate students.
