Bridgewater baseball splits two

The Bridgewater College Eagles split a Tuesday twinbill with Husson University, losing the opener 10-3 and winning Game 2 by a score of 3-1.

Sophomore Dillon Via pitched a complete game to lead the Eagles to the victory in the second game. He allowed nine hits and one unearned runs in his seven innings. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.

The Eagles managed just six hits in the game, but scored single runs in the second, third and fourth inning to give Via the support he needed.

The Eagles loaded the bases in the second on an error, a double by Andrew Hacker and a walk to Jonathan Mason. Ryan Smith then drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Jay Thompson lined a two-out double in the third and scored on a single by Hacker to push the margin to 2-0.

BC scored its final run in the fourth when Mason led off the inning with a double and scored on a single by Ryan Smith.

Husson jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the opener and the Eagles never recovered.

The Eagles scored in the second on a single by Derrik Walling and added another run in the third on a single by Bryan Sanderson.

Husson broke the game open with three in the sixth to take an 8-2 lead.

BC added a run in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Walling, but Husson countered with two more runs in the seventh to lead 10-3.

The Eagles managed to get the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh. Alex Nuttycombe doubled, moved to third on a single by Sanderson and scored on a groundout by Mason to make the score 10-4. Thompson walked before Hacker singled to score Sanderson. Walling then walked to load the bases and pinch-hitter Cam Stevenson walked to force home a run, trimming the score to 10-6. Darren Yoder then grounded out to end the contest.

Hacker led the Eagles in the first game with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Sanderson was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI while Walling was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

The Eagles, now 11-4, close out their Florida trip Wednesday with a single, nine-inning contest against Aurora.
