At 11:03 a.m. Wednesday (Aug. 6), Virginia State Police responded to a five-vehicle crash in the westbound lanes of Interstate 64 near the 128 mile marker in Albemarle County. The chain-reaction crash involved two tractor-trailers and three passenger vehicles. Four individuals have been transported from the scene to UVA Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. One individual died at the scene.
Traffic in the westbound lanes of I-64 had started to slow for an existing traffic crash when a tractor-trailer failed to brake in time. The tractor-trailer struck the SUV in front of it, thus sparking the chain-reaction crash.
The westbound lanes of I-64 should be cleared and re-opened to through traffic by 3 p.m. VDOT is managing the traffic detour for westbound I-64 traffic.
