SPARKabcs (Activity Break Choices)

This is a pilot program, developed in response to our Community Health Needs Assessment, that Augusta Health Community Outreach and the three local school districts will begin in August.  Evidence supports an association between school based physical activity (PA) and academic performance.  This program, selected with input from superintendents and teaching staff, helps classroom teachers incorporate physical activity to improve academic achievement and foster health behaviors.  The three elementary schools—North River in Augusta County, Bessie Weller in Staunton and Berkeley Glenn in Waynesboro—will pilot in during the 2014-15 school year. August 14, teachers from the three schools and Community Outreach staff from Augusta Health will attend training and receive equipment to implement the abcs into their classrooms.  For information, contact Kara Meeks at 540.932.4191.

GO GIRLS

This is a dance-based patient fitness and education support group for girls age 7-21 years old who are at risk for weight-related medical complications.  It is being offered by the University of Virginia Pediatric Endocrinology division in conjunction with the Center for Research in Reproduction, along the Augusta Health and the Waynesboro Family YMCA.  The program begins Tuesday, August 19 at the Waynesboro YMCA at 5:15 pm.  For information, the contact is again Kara Meeks at 540.932.4191.
