Augusta County teen killed in late-night accident

policecar3Virginia State Police are investigating a vehicle crash that occurred Tuesday in Augusta County. Sr. Trooper S.A. Simmons was notified of the crash at approximately 2:27 a.m. of an overturned vehicle in the 2700 block of Stuarts Draft Highway (Route 340).

The driver, Thomas E. Twisdale, 17, of Stuarts Draft, Va., died at the scene.  The driver was not wearing a seatbelt.

A preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle, a 2000 Ford Contour, was traveling south on Route 340 when it ran off the right side of the road, struck a sign and embankment, before the vehicle overturned.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
