David Murphy took a 3-2 pitch to deep left to score the winning run for the Los Angeles Angels in a 5-4 11-inning win over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.
Murphy came to bat with the bases loaded after O’s manager Buck Showalter opted to intentionally walk both Mike Trout and Albert Pujols with two outs in the inning.
Murphy worked the count in his favor to 3-1, took a fastball from reliever Brian Matusz on the outside corner for strike two, then ripped a 91-mph fastball over the head of left fielder David Lough to score Carlos Perez, who had doubled off Chaz Roe (2-2, 3.12 ERA) to lead off the inning
Gerardo Parra (10) and Chris Davis (29) each homered for the Orioles (56-54), who remain five games behind the New York Yankees in the American League East, and are three games out of the second wild-card spot in the AL.
