All-star hoops game features top Virginia post-grads

Fishburne Military School post-graduate basketball coach Ed Huckaby noticed a gap in the market for basketball recruiters.

“Most all-star games are for high-school players,” said Huckaby, who is filling the void with the inaugural Virginia Post-Grad All-Star Basketball Game set for Saturday on campus at FMS in Waynesboro.

The all-star weekend, which begins Friday with a round of practices featuring post-grad all-stars from across the state, is a “recruiting opportunity,” Huckaby said, for players and coaches.

“To me, even if we just got one coach in, it would be worth it, because that one coach might give one kid an opportunity,” Huckaby said. “We expect a lot more than one, obviously, and we want this to be something that we keep going every year, just something else that we can add to the mix of things that we do.”

The game will of course be a highlight, but for the coaches in attendance the practice schedule Friday afternoon will be a time where they can get a different feel for what the players may have to offer their programs.

“This gives coaches a chance to see them outside of just a game environment. You get to see them in practice, how they react to different situations. That’s important in terms of evaluating how they can fit into your program,” Huckaby said.

The All-Star Game is at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Fishburne Military School gym. Admission is $5.
