All northbound lanes on Interstate 81 have reopened at the sinkhole site at mile marker 284 in Shenandoah County. The Virginia State Police performed a slow roll for traffic on I-81 to help clear out the traffic backups around 2:45 p.m.
The contractor has completed the excavation and filling of the sinkhole. Pavement has been applied to the road surfaced and cooled to an appropriate temperature that can support traffic.
Motorists should expect significant traffic delays in this area as traffic clears from extensive backups. Backups up to 13 miles have been reported in the area at various times.
