The bridge over Stillhouse Creek on Route 693 (Stillhouse Creek Road) in Albemarle County will be closed to traffic for the next several months.

The bridge was closed on Sept. 24 after VDOT bridge inspectors found damage to one of the abutments that support the bridge deck and superstructure. That damage posed safety concerns for the traveling public, and the bridge was closed.

Stillhouse Creek Road is closed to through traffic at Route 694 (Miller Lake Road) and Route 693 (Burnt Mountain Road). Drivers should follow the signed detour route using Route 692 (Plank Road), Route 693 (Burnt Mountain Road) and Route 635 (Craigs Store Road).

All entrances on both sides of the bridge remain accessible.

VDOT is developing a project to replace the bridge superstructure and the abutments that support the bridge. The preliminary estimated timeframe for completing repairs and reopening the bridge is January 2025.

The current structure, which is a steel span with a timber deck, was built in 1932 and carries approximately 161 vehicles per day, according to 2018 traffic counts.
