Albemarle County names new planning director

albemarle countyAlbemarle County has hired Andrew Gast-Bray as the county’s new planning director.

Gast-Bray brings to this role over 25 years of professional experience working both in private practice and with local government. His most recent governmental position was the director of planning and zoning for the City of Lebanon, N.H., near Dartmouth College, where he managed planning, zoning, transportation planning, and economic development.

His educational background includes a bachelor’s in engineering science from the University of Michigan, a Ph.D. in mechanics from Ecole Centrale de Lille France, and a master in community planning from the University of Cincinnati.  He has also served as an adjunct professor at Ball State University, teaching sustainable and environmental planning, as well as transportation planning.

He is accredited by the American Institute of Certified Planners, LEED-ND by the U.S. Green Building Council, and CNU-A by the Congress of New Urbanism, where he participated in updating their manual for Context Sensitive Solutions in Designing Major Urban Thoroughfares for Walkable Communities.  He is well published and holds several patents.

“Mr. Gast-Bray’s credentials and experience make him an excellent fit for Albemarle County,” said County Executive Tom Foley in making the announcement.  “He brings significant expertise in planning issues related to urban communities as well as sustainability and environmental planning.  His varied background will allow him to provide strong leadership as we work towards our community’s desired future.”
