AFP kicks off inaugural Fund Drive

“I listen to public radio, and it’s free, but if I had to, I’d put the quarter in the slot. Well, fund-drive time is when you collect all the quarters and put them in the slot.”

A reader and new subscriber thus explained why she signed on to purchase from the AFP what she otherwise gets for free.

That’s the concept behind our Basic and Enhanced Subscriptions – where for as little as $5 a month you can support the news-gathering operations at the AFP.

We’re looking to get $25,000 in commitments from readers and advertisers by Dec. 7 through the sale of subscriptions to the AFP and ads on the AFP website and in our print magazine, The New Dominion, from local business and industry and civic-minded individuals interested in purchasing ad space for local nonprofits.

And just like our friends in public broadcasting, we’re going to risk being annoying reminding you of what we need to do to reach our goal.

The goal for us here at the AFP is actually pretty modest. Just 200 subscriptions gets us almost halfway there to that $25,000 goal. The ads on the AFP, meanwhile, with new packages offering access to our reader base with your message for as little as $50 a month, are something of an unknown. We think they’ll go fast once they start going, considering the impact stories in the AFP have been having on the national-news front of late, with a series of stories on the Virginia governor’s race last week picking up notice in the Washington Post and Wall Street Journal and changing the tone of coverage of the race in the past several days.

Advertising in the new-look New Dominion Magazine comes with two benefits – reduced costs across the board for our advertisers and a guaranteed stable of readers who have been picking the award-winning product up regularly for going on three full years now for coverage that has been setting the agenda in local news.

We’ve got a modest head start on reaching our $25,000 goal – if I can describe the thermometer that you often see associated with such endeavors, we’re at about the 1 percent mark as of this writing.

Detailed information on what you can do to be a part of the AFP is below. Thanks for giving us some thought on this.
