AEW is coming back to Chartway Arena in Norfolk, and it’s a guarantee that the number of people on hand won’t be anywhere near the company’s high-water mark at the venue.
I was on hand for the AEW “Dynamite” show in 2021, and according to information from Wrestlenomics, there were 4,863 tickets distributed for that one, which featured the first public appearance of Aaron’s Creek, Va., native “Hangman” Adam Page as the new AEW world champ, and a confrontation between CM Punk and MJF that would help spark a program between those two.
The latest information from WrestleTix has the upcoming Aug. 14 AEW “Dynamite” show at the Chartway Arena at 1,521 tickets distributed, with a setup designed to accommodate just 2,293 fans, less than half what were there for that 2021 show.
Yikes.
AEW was most recently at Chartway Arena earlier this year, on Jan. 13, for a “Collision” show, with WrestleTix reporting a total of 3,125 tickets distributed for a card featuring FTR, House of Black, Adam Copeland and Chris Jericho.
An Oct. 26, 2022, AEW “Dynamite” had a tickets-distributed count of 3,431 for a card featuring, Jericho, FTR, Bryan Danielson, Claudio Castagnoli, Swerve Strickland and Jon Moxley.
WWE, in its last three appearances at Chartway Arena, had 7,447 tickets distributed for a Sept. 11, 2023, WWE “Raw” show, 7,121 tickets distributed for a Nov. 28 “Raw” show, and 7.734 tickets distributed for a May 16, 2022, “Raw” show.
