Adopt a SnodBOT: Designer toys from Staunton artist

snodbotsArtist Craig Snodgrass has introduced his latest creation: SnodBOTS! SnodBOTS are limited edition designer toys based on Snodgrass’ illustrations. To fund the creation of the first SnodBOT, Craig has launched a crowd funding campaign on Kickstarter.

The first SnodBOT model, DUP-1 or “Duppy”’ features multiple points of articulation and stands at 6” tall. The toys will be cast in resin by a manufacture in the United States. The toys are offered as rewards for backing the Kickstarter campaign. The toys are available un-painted or hand-painted. A limited number of SnodBOTS will be custom painted, signed, and numbered by Craig Snodgrass for a premium pledge.

“I’m always pushing the direction of my art into new mediums. I really wanted to take the feeling of the robots I illustrate and bring that into the third dimension. A static sculpture didn’t seem like it would lend itself to the expressive nature of my robots – so I decided to make an action figure” said Craig Snodgrass “I came up with ‘Duppy’. Duppy is a little robot recently booted up and trying to puzzle out his environment and his own consciousness. Much like a newborn child, Duppy is an empty vessel. Hopefully kind humans will adopt these SnodBOTS and guide them through the world.”

During the development of SnodBOTS, Snodgrass tapped into the vast amount of technical and creative knowledge available on in Staunton. “I consulted Peter Denbigh of Skyler Innovations about how to run a successful crowdfunding campaign. There is a lot more that goes into than you’d think. I also worked with Dan Funk and the Staunton Makers Space to refine my prototypes using 3D printing. Chris Youngs of the Artisans Shop has a background in the collectible toy industry. I leaned on his experience at Gentle Giant Studios to review my prototype. He offered pointers and engineering suggestions which helped refine the product for manufacturing.”

  • The SnodBOTS Kickstarter has 14 days remaining as of September 30 and is it at 52% of it’s goal of $6,5000.
  • The campaign ends on Friday, October 14 at 10 PM.  SnodBOTS can be found on Kickstarer.com by searching “SnodBOTS” or visiting this link: http://kck.st/2d0WNjV.
  • Snodgrass is offering a variety of rewards starting at $5. Once the goal is reached production will start and SnodBOTS will start shipping by January of 2017 at the latest.
  • This will be a limited edition run. Once these toys are made, this model will not be reproduced again.
