ACC issues another statement regarding conference realignment

AFP

Think the blogosphere is overrated as a power source? Consider the latest from the Atlantic Coast Conference. The ACC Council of Presidents issued a statement on Thursday to “express our commitment to preserve and prospect the future of our outstanding league.”

The move would ostensibly answer continued speculation on fan blogs up and down the Eastern Seaboard that have been rife with speculation about the future of the ACC and individual members.

The rumor mill has been working in overdrive since founding ACC member Maryland moved last month to accept admission into the Big Ten. Several member institutions, including the University of Virginia, have been rumored to be considering making jumps of their own.

Last week, UVa. athletics director Craig Littlepage issued a statement to deny that the school was considering any such move.

“The University of Virginia is a proud member of the Atlantic Coast Conference,” Littlepage said in the statement, adding that “(n)either representatives of the athletics department, nor President Teresa Sullivan, has received invitations to nor sought membership in other conferences.”

“The ACC’s commitment to its members and their student-athletes is the finest in the country. We look forward to continuing this relationship far into the future. Our goal is to continue supporting the ACC and its initiatives for long-term success,” Littlepage said.

Today’s statement from the ACC Council of Presidents is below:

“We, the undersigned presidents of the Atlantic Coast Conference, wish to express our commitment to preserve and protect the future of our outstanding league.  We want to be clear that the speculation about ACC schools in negotiations or considering alternatives to the ACC are totally false.  The presidents of the ACC are united in our commitment to a strong and enduring conference.  The ACC has long been a leader in intercollegiate athletics, both academically and athletically, and the constitution of our existing and future member schools will maintain the ACC’s position as one of the nation’s premier conferences.”
