The ACC leads all conferences with five teams among the Sweet Sixteen, with No. 1 seeds Duke, UVA and UNC joined by No. 4 seeds FSU and Virginia Tech.
More on the ACC in the postseason:
- This marks the fourth time in the last five years that at least four ACC teams have reached the NCAA regional semifinals, and this year’s five teams is one shy of the record of six in 2016.
- The ACC is the second conference to send three No. 1 seeds to the Sweet 16, matching the mark first set by the Big East in 2009.
- With a combined 10-2 mark in the 2019 NCAA Tournament thus far, the ACC is assured of extending its record non-losing streak in the event to 32 consecutive years.
- ACC teams have combined to win a record 69 NCAA Tournament games the past five years while placing four teams among the Final Four and claiming two national titles during that span (Duke in 2015 and North Carolina in 2017).
- When Duke faces Virginia Tech on Friday night in the East Regional semifinal, it will mark the ninth time two ACC teams have met head-to-head in the NCAA Tournament and the sixth time in the last five seasons.
- The ACC has six total teams still alive in postseason play with NC State having reached the NIT quarterfinals. The Wolfpack plays host to Lipscomb on Wednesday night, with the winner advancing to the semifinals at Madison Square Garden.
- Among active head coaches with 10 or more NCAA Tournament games, Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski ranks first with a winning percentage of .768 (96-29) … North Carolina’s Roy Williams ranks second at .760, having won 79 of his 104 NCAA Tournament games.
- Mike Krzyzewski’s 96 NCAA Tournament wins are not only more than any other coach in history, they are more than all but five teams and eight conferences all-time in NCAA play.
- North Carolina ranks second all-time in NCAA Tournament history with 126 wins … Duke ranks third with 113.
- Since 1985, nearly 50 percent of ACC teams receiving NCAA Tournament bids have reached the Sweet 16 (95 of 192).
- Virginia is a No. 1 NCAA Regional seed for the seventh time overall and the fourth time in the last six seasons under current head coach Tony Bennett, a finalist for the USBWA’s Henry Iba Award.
- Virginia Tech has played its way into the Sweet 16 for the first time since the tournament expanded to include at least 64 teams (1985) … Sunday’s second-round win over Liberty gave the Hokies a school single-season record for wins (26) and marked head coach Buzz Williams’ 100th victory at the school.
- Florida State, which has set the school single-season record for wins with 29, is back in the NCAA Tournament field for the third consecutive year and the seventh time in 11 years under current head coach Leonard Hamilton.
