ABW (Anybody But Williams)

Best Seat in the House column by Chris Graham

williamsg2.jpgEverybody seems to want Gregg Williams to be the next Washington Redskins coach.
I guess what everybody really wants, then, is for the ‘Skins to slide back into mediocrity.
I’m being blunt here, but also accurate – when you look at the NFL head-coaching record of Williams, currently the defensive coordinator in Washington.
Try 17-31 in three backsliding seasons in Buffalo – that’s roughly 6-10 every year on average.

I’m not saying at all that Williams isn’t a defensive-coodinator-without-equal. Even in Buffalo, Williams’ teams there were known for their solid D. And the ‘Skins of the past few years have been a force on that side of the ball.

But … would Washington be any better off next year with Williams as the head man, Al Saunders back as offensive coordinator and basically everybody else in the places that they’re in now?

Let’s think about it for a minute. This year’s Redskins ended up 9-7 and made the playoffs only by winning their last four with their backs against the wall for basically the entire last month of the season.

I’m not sure that I look at that as something that I want to see maintained.

Joe Gibbs left a solid foundation in place for somebody like Bill Cowher or Russ Grimm or even Pete Carroll to tinker with and build upon with the goal in mind of taking the franchise back to the Promised Land of pro football.

I think change is in order to get the ‘Skins back to being more than an NFL afterthought. Gregg Williams, God love him, only promises more of what we’ve seen from the team the past few years, and that’s if he’s lucky.
